UEFI Explained - BIOS vs EFI/UEFI

Submitted by Matt Page on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 07:16

In with the new, out with the old. UEFI not only looks snazzier but is replacing the old school BIOS on modern motherboards.

For the most part, this isn't very technical. There is really no magic to it; Nor smoke and mirrors. For decades computer systems have had a simple, keyboard-only BIOS. This BIOS always runs prior to booting in to your operating system. Basically, what the BIOS has always done is allow all the computer parts (hardware) to "check-in" so that all the parts can talk to one-another once the user boots in to the operating system. So, what is this new UEFI that is replacing the BIOS in modern systems? READ MORE

Intel UMG Boss Leaves

Submitted by: Franco Santa-Maria

Intel LogoIt seems as if there's been a lot of shifting around in the upper management of some big technology companies. Of course much of that is probably due to the massive departure of all of AMD's top management, making other smaller departures seem more like part of the trend. However, it can't be denied that there have been more executives leaving now than there normally are. Now, its Intel's turn to lose a top exec. The President of Intel's Ultra Mobility Group, Anand Chandrasekher, has announced he is leaving "to pursue other interests." AMD Hires New CIO

Submitted by: Franco Santa-Maria

AMD LogoRecently, AMD has been in quite a bit of turmoil. While their graphics division leads that market and has been highly successful for the last couple of years now, their CPU division still lags far behind the competition, their best CPUs being forced down into the bargain bin by Intel's new Sandy Bridge CPUs. Additionally, while a strong force in the mobile GPU market, their mobile CPUs are arguably worse off than their desktop CPUs, and until recently, ULV offerings were non-existent. Through this, the majority of AMD's leadership was ousted, including CEO Dirk Meyer. There were even rumors of the company being up for sale. However, AMD seems to be working towards having a fully-functional leadership again shortly, starting with the hiring experienced executive Mike Wolfe from Freescale Technologies as their Chief Information Officer. ...read more
