Nintendo and Others Providing Sneek Peeks at E3

Submitted by: The BURNED iN Crew

nintendo-panties-courtesy-stuffwelikeAnd the console wars continue as E3 started with a bang. Sony made a move with it's new motion controller (see what we did there?). Just in case you didn't catch that, the controller is called the "Move" (OH, I GET IT NOW!). But moving on, Microsoft was showing off their new motion sensor device as well, only it's not a wand type controller like the Wii and PS3 are offering up. Titled Kinect, it's a full body detection device.  So no more sitting on the couch playing a motion sports game with just the flip of a wrist. Yeah, we know some of you Wii Sports junkies made it back to your couch quicker than it takes to go to the store and pick up a bag of chips. And finally we wouldn't want to leave Nintendo out of the spotlight, even though we indirectly mentioned them and also let them offer up a sweet ass image (pun? where?). Focus. Back to gaming. Nintendo's new 3DS, is offereing handheld gamers some 3D options without glasses. Now that is sweet. source

Lag Detected on Sony's Motion Controller, the Playstation Move

Submitted by: The BURNED iN Crew

PlayStation-Move"When Sony unveiled its PlayStation Move (nee Arc) controller at the GDC last week, it came along with some impressive promises: it would only cost developers 2MB of system memory (out of 256MB on offer) and it would respond to user inputs within a single frame of animation. Our own experiences with the thing felt a bit more laggy, and now Eurogamer is echoing those impressions and putting a bit of science behind them courtesy of a 60fps Kodak Zi6 camcorder. By filming the controllers and their on-screen representation, the site's tireless statisticians calculated an actual lag (including that of the display) of 113ms -- closer to 10 6.78 frames if a game is running at 60fps. Naturally much of this is thanks to the rendering of the result and not just the Move, but according to a 2008 GamaSutra test we found (linked as "More Coverage" below), the controller lag from the standard PS3 controller varies widely from game to game, with GTA IV measured at 166ms -- almost 50 percent higher than seen by the Move. So, while we can't draw too many conclusions about this single-game test from GDC, we can give a little advice: get back to beating up some underworldian goons as Kratos and don't worry about it." source

Our Take: And they are still trying to catch up to the Wii...

N900 can Double as a Bluetooth Playstation Controller

Submitted by: The BURNED iN Crew

n900-controller"Should you be the sort of person who doesn't mind fiddling around with alpha level software, you'll definitely want to know about the BlueMaemo Bluetooth emulator. Available via the Extras-Devel repository on your N900, this app allows the device to mimic other Bluetooth gadgets, such as keyboards, mice, and yes indeedy, gaming controllers. Its developer Valério Domingos humbly points out that the purpose of connecting up to a PS3 is purely for menu navigation and easier text input, though we've no doubt a few hardcore Nokia loyalists will try using this in an action game to prove the N900's superiority. You may follow Valério and his ongoing refinement of the app in the Maemo.org link below, or you can jump past the break to see the full controller layout and an instructional video on how to hook things up -- it's in Italian, but you should be able to grasp what's going on senza problemi." Source

Our Take: So when is the N900 going to be able to cook us some bacon and eggs for breakfast?  That's when we'll be sold on it.

PS3 New Firmware Includes Facebook Integration after Xbox 360 Adds Twitter

"How's this for a quick turn around. Facebook integration for the Cross Media Bar interface was only confirmed on Monday, but it arrives today with firmware 3.10—a day after the 360 added Twitter and Last.fm

You'll be able to share game trophy and progress info, plus PlayStation store purchases on your Facebook news feed, and deeper integration is expected down the road." source

Our Take: Facebook & Twitter. PS3 & Xbox360. Intel & AMD. Windows & Apple. Pepsi & Coke. Ford & Chevy.  You have to pick a side! You must! We ask "Really? Why? Can't we all just get along?" (And yes we did leave out the Jeep and Linux lovers on purpose :-P )
