AMD has not been very competitive with Intel recently, as they are still
stuck on a very old architecture, trying to stretch its useful life as
long as possible until Bulldozer, AMD's first all-new architecture in a
number of years, arrives. Constituting the high-end of their "Fusion"
intiative, AMD claims that these CPUs will be very competitive
performance-wise than Intel's Sandy Bridge processors while also drawing
less power. To prove this, AMD has made a video comparing a Core
i7-2630QM machine to one sporting a quad-core AMD Llano processor.
In the video, AMD uses the machine to render a game benchmark, where it easily outperforms the noticeably choppy Sandy Bridge integrated, and then proceeds to run a video with post-processing, render a 3D animation, and edit an excel document all at the same time. During this run, the AMD processor was noticeably snappier. Remember that 3D is Fusion's strong suit, however, and AMD no doubt tailored this comparison to figure in their favor. Nevertheless, its worth a watch.
Hopefully AMD's Bulldozer will be out soon and finally give Intel a reason to keep prices down.
