The same day that Intel released the Core i7-990X, they flew a potentially much jucier tidbit in under the radar. Most people aren't going to drop $1000 on a CPU, but most enthusiasts are certainly willing to spend $300 on a good CPU. Additionally, those who were hoping for a more reasonably-priced Intel 6-core to hit the market should be very happy with Intel's price cuts to the i7-960 and i7-970.
First up, the quad-core i7-960 appears to have been moved into line for the budget 1366 i7, just as Intel did with the 930 and 950. At its new MSRP of $294, it will likely replace the 950 completely as the baseline 1366 part. Currently, the 960 is going for $320 on newegg.
Next, the i7-970 has also gotten a big price cut. Down from almost $900, the 970 now tips the scales at a slightly more manageable $583 MSRP. Whilst still expensive, it is a much more reasonable price than the 970's original MSRP, and is now well worth your consideration instead of spending almost double on an "Extreme Edition" six-core. Currently the 970 is going for $600 on newegg.
